Meet Kat

Kat has worked with global brands and entrepreneurs making a difference for 30 years including Homeless World Cup, Nike, Desmond Tutu, Muhammad & Lonnie Ali, Colin Farrell, Erica Cantona and Lewis Hamilton.

She was the founder of Authentic PR, for businesses with a positive purpose; and global communications director for the Homeless World Cup, positively impacting 250,000 people homeless worldwide and generating over £25 million in media coverage. She was Executive Producer for the documentary film ‘Kicking It’ narrated by Colin Farrell, selected for Sundance Film Festival and sold to US Sports channel ESPN; and the Homeless World Cup feature film with Blueprint Pictures (Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) made for Netflix.

Many more women are feeling called to express their true voice. To speak up, stand up for what they believe in.

This can bring up fears and vulnerability as well as the opportunity to break old patterns of keeping quiet to avoid conflict and replacing with courage, learning to be with the discomfort of disagreement and growing your resilience.

If there isn’t one, visualise being under a waterfall cleansing any negativity, anything you no longer need away. Take a long bath with epsom salts, stand under your shower for a little bit longer and breathe.

I’m so grateful to the shade of the sea grape tree, dozing whilst listening to the waves and the peace.

We’ve been spending time at sunset watering the vegetable garden, watching for whales, listening to the Peace, watching a rare blood red sun set into the turquoise Caribbean Sea.

Are you serving yours?

When we don’t we can be drained and depleted. Perhaps you are chasing the money, who you believe to be the budget holders, decision makers, easy pickings?

We can feel stuck, void of inspiration and creative flow. As clients dry up, we begin to lose confidence, even doubt our purpose and value.

When I was creating True Business I assumed logically that the audience would be entrepreneurs, it’s about business afterall! The inspiration dried up, I stopped writing, became disinterested.

And then, whilst interviewing for a new tenant a creative couple showed up. The man had had  a successful career in music, a four album deal with one of the biggest record labels. Whilst the band made money for the record company the band members themselves hadn’t. He felt in a constant battle for creative integrity. He was now a graphic designer. His partner a bright, creative woman was an illustrator working for an artisan coffee company as an account manager.

As we spoke, I experienced an urgency to complete the book, to make True Business widely available for creative people to thrive in business. This was a light bulb moment. ‘This is my audience!’ It makes complete sense that a business model leading with your creative spirit would serve creative people, but my logical mind hadn’t yet made that leap.

In this moment, I realised that I don’t like entrepreneurs. I’d come to personally define entrepreneurs as a masculine approach to business, making profit at any cost, lacking in emotional intelligence, empathy for others, with zero thought for our earth.

What a relief to let go of the entrepreneur and allow the energy and inspiration to flow in service to the creatives, pioneers, artists, trailblazers, healers and teachers who care.

Do you love and care about the audience you are working with? Or do they drain and deplete you? If so, who is your love and attention naturally drawn to? This is a great indicator of your true audience.

Stop for a moment. Ask: Who in your heart are you truly here to serve? Listen to your Heart. It already knows.

The Water Lily has inspired me to close my business at dusk, to rest, to rejuvenate. I can have a bad habit of picking up work in the evening to finish off, send that invoice, edit that chapter. Watching the Lily close reminded me to go to the beach, walk, swim and close for the evening to rest.

This is magic for adrenaline junkies.
I played along with it for years and years. 
For a longtime comfort was outside my comfort zone!

And yet I have found deep magic in connection with the divine, in peacefulness, in natural beauty, in the wilds of nature, floating in the Caribbean Sea looking up at the sun and the moon, the taste of a sweet mango straight from the tree, in skinny dipping with Trev under the full moon and shooting stars, in laughing with my niece and nephew, seeing kids having fun playing sport.

None of these gloriously magical moments are outside my comfort zone.

I used to be an outside your comfort zone junkie. It is fun to have your heart pounding at the mix of excitement and fear as you step over a threshold and do something new or something that challenges you. I used to do this so much that I was never in my comfort zone.

To intimate this is the place magic happens is BS.

Magic is natural beauty, is peacefulness, is wellness, is being free, is being in this one present moment.

The group relationship deepens too. And you end up with a stunning collection of photographs to take home with you.

Here’s my favourite photograph from my photoshoot with Yensa to trial and create the experience for the women coming on the True Business Antigua Retreat.

I’m terrified of the Atlantic Ocean. Its intensity is intimidating and overwhelming to me. This is how I can experience masculine power in business and within me – aggressive, destructive, running roughshod over everyone and everything without a care. In the absence of the feminine nurturing essence, in the absence of the wisdom of the heart, this masculine approach in business led me to burnout, anxiety and depression.

Here in this moment I went beyond this fear of masculine power into the experience of embracing both energies equally within me. A harmony, balance, union that created a calm, peaceful, soft power within me. It also burst forth a whole lot of creative inspiration.

I’m curious, what do you see?

We returned a few months later with the True Business Antigua Retreat women and recreated this photograph with five of us. This time the waves splashing over us from the ocean and it was wild and exhilarating.

Yoga and the Dark Night of the Soul offers a powerful reframe of depression. Whilst modern day civilisation is fearful and ashamed of depression, hiding and medicating it, Ancient India saw darkness as a right of passage, a calling to sacred love, a gift. This book is about that right of passage, about the journey from fear and confusion to sacred love, unveiling the four stages to that journey.

The book is full of relatable, inspiring stories from Simon’s life and the people around him as well as accessible illustrations from the Bhagavad Gita. While yoga has to some degree become part of the feel good industry and “oooh look at my amazing handstand on Instagram” this book brings us the true purpose of yoga with depth and authenticity, to follow your purpose, engage your heart in yoga practice and live a life of love and compassion. It is quite literally a breath of fresh air.

Simon spent his childhood studying Sanskrit and the sacred writings of India and his teenage years living with monks the temples and monasteries of India. This is so far away from my own childhood growing up on a housing estate in Iver Heath, Bucks that it seems other worldly. He also apprenticed with an elderly master practitioner in the Bhakti tradition for 16 years. After returning to the UK to study Law at Cambridge University he now lives in Costa Rica practicing corporate law and is dedicated to making the ancient wisdom of India accessible to modern day.  He is also the author of The Book of Dharma, Making enlightened choices.

I’m very happy to share on this sunny afternoon in Bath that the two PR with Heart Online Course bursaries have been awarded to women growing The Green House Education Project in Bath and Waves for Change in South Africa.

The Green House Education Project – Anna Robinson and Cindy Adams

There is an urgent need to transform the outdated schooling system in the UK and The Green House Education Project, based in Bath, is taking action to do just that, exploring and pioneering new ways that put the children’s needs at the core. Established in September 2014 they have a geodesic dome, yurt and outdoor teaching spaces that can accommodate up to 23 children from 5-14 years old. Waves for Change – Hannah Fowles

Based in South Africa, Waves for Change uses surfing as a form of therapy to help vulnerable children, often from violent and impoverished communities, cope with the stress of their lives. I spent a wonderful day yesterday with the Teen Yoga Foundation aligning with the true purpose of the organisation, opening up the vision at the heart and the positive, inspiring message it has to share.

A beautiful purpose of building creativity and well-being in young people with yoga. Already there are over 550 teachers in 20 countries working with an estimated 50,000 kids in 1000 schools, empowering children to flourish and thrive. They are training teachers, researching, advocating, opening up the conditions and opportunities for yoga to be in secondary schools. Imagine all all that blossoming creativity and fulfilment with new visions for our planet spilling out of the next generation of peaceful, balanced human beings as a result.

This is what every child deserves in school, a true connection to who they really are and support for this to flourish. Then we will have more compassion, kindness, fulfilment, with the epidemic of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues a thing of the past – it’s all about connection, connection connection.

So grateful to organisations like Teen Yoga creating real grassroots to global impact with simple powerful tools. These are the organisations we need to support, fund, invest in to create the change we are desperate for – healthy, happy humans.

As I come away from the first PR with Heart Antigua Retreat with four brilliant women, the transformation is still full flight.  And I want a Polaroid to capture the highlights; only the whole week was a highlight! The creative inspiration and connection to pure source; how everything flowed so effortlessly; the dedication and commitment of each woman to their true nature and purpose – what a joy; the clarity each woman received; the life-changing insights; the beauty, the nature, the innocence; the wonderful walks in nature, long swims in that magical sea, warm-hearted local people; the power each woman discovered within them; the stunning villa and how that came to me; the excitement the women had going home because they love who they are and what they are doing in their business. It goes on….

Creative inspiration and connection to source

During an early trip to Antigua I saw a vision that stopped me in my tracks – four blue phoenixes rising from the Caribbean Sea. This spoke to me of four women called to the Island to rise into their creative hearts, their true nature, purpose and power. PR with Heart Antigua was born. From here I made the choice to create it purely from source, taking action guided by my intuitive heart, letting go of the outcome.  At one point the fourth woman was creating the money to attend. In the past I’d have frantically rushed about to get someone else just in case it didn’t come through. This time my heart clearly spoke ‘relax, it is taken care of’. The energy I used to waste and stress I caused myself because I didn’t trust my intuition. I learnt that when you receive, when you create from your higher nature in harmony with life, it is divine, it is effortless, it is who you are.

The impact before we even arrived

The impact on the women once they made the commitment to attend, before we even arrived, blew me away – their power ignited, one restructured her business; one healed and deepened the relationship with her father. I more than loved standing for their hearts, their higher nature with love, truth and compassion, no compromise. A privilege.

Life changing insights kept on coming

A few favourites came during the financial structure explorations. One woman’s relationship with money in her lower nature is ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ – masculine, driven, loads of money and most noticeably no children. In her heart, her business is providing for her large family. How many women miss out on the truth of their heart when they adopt this masculine approach to business?

Another woman, in her lower nature is working with clients that don’t belong to her with a pattern of them leaving. Because they are not her clients! In her higher nature she is working with corporate directors introducing a new creative technology into large corporate teams who go on to transform their lives and the business. With this energetic embodiment she received her first corporate client 5 hours after touching down on the runway in the UK. These are her true clients that she is here to serve. Effortless.

Resistance

Throughout the week one woman had an inner battle as she questioned, undermined and denied her true nature, purpose and power. The control set in as the ego rejected her truth and fought to keep her small, tightly contained, in hiding while her higher nature offers deep connection and expansion.  The pain was evident, the realisation powerful and tearful.  How often do you battle with or try to control a natural expansion? How often do you reject your intuition or heart’s desire believing you know how it will turn out and you’re not having that?!  In doing so you shut down your whole life.  Embrace your true nature, let go of expected outcomes, take the action as an offering of love, and this is life changing.

Clarity

Each of the four women went home with crystal clear clarity.  Clarity is my true essence and what I love to bring into business.  With clarity you can lean back, relax into what you are here to do on this earth. You have swift decision making saying an easy no when it is not in alignment. And you can enjoy mastery of your creative focus and the vitality, energy, fun and joy that comes with that. You can embrace and live your whole life.

The Magic of Villa Amazing

I’d been looking for a villa with four bedrooms with no luck. Until on a September visit my return flight was cancelled and I had to leave Antigua a day later. Standing in the check in queue I got chatting to a lovely couple scheduled to fly that day. They just happened to have a four bedroom villa and were considering renting for the first time. It was perfect – 180 degree sea views, infinity pool, beautiful bedrooms, and wonderful spaces for us to work in. When the world rearranges itself around you, when magic happens, you know you are on the right track.

Local Warm-Hearted People and Adventures

Walks with Vorn foraging for tangerines, coconut, and tamarind with stories about his grandma, knowledge of the plants and a tropical rainstorm. Taking to the sea to explore the beauty of the outer islands on our day off with Adventure Antigua, the lovely Trevor Erskine and a wind that turned the boat into flying log flume. Stewed Fish with Cavell ‘I put love in my cooking’ and pedicures with Tamara in Crab Hill, we were welcomed in as part of the local community.

Support from the Men

For me the new paradigm for women on earth is found where the feminine is seen, respected, held, loved and supported by the masculine. We all received this support from men in our lives to be in Antigua – be it financial, emotional or spiritual – it was deeply nourishing and appreciated.

Friendships Formed

I’m quite sure I’ll be life long friends with the four women attending keenly following their business growth with love and interest. Then there was Trevor Erskine who believed in me, and the retreat, encouraging me to create it; Kirsty MacAndrew who tuned in with me weekly to listen to intuitive guidance for inspired actions to take; Marianne Hartley, a business soul partner with regular check in’s; Victoria Player, a business consultant for women entrepreneurs who specialises in freedom based businesses who helped me feel my way practically into the new structure of my business to be based in the UK and Antigua; and Wendy Price who regularly pointed out when my ego was having a go and to return to my heart and what I’d love to create. It can take a team to create your dream. Thank you.

During my recent trip to Antigua a friend saved the lives of 2 baby sea turtles. And I was reminded to be present to mine.

It was my last day and my head was busy with whether I’d made the most of the trip? Had I created my vision? Was it worth the time and money? What did I need to do today to make sure I get the most of it? Let’s make a plan!

My friend patiently reminded me (again) that this is not how it works in Antigua. Here, you go with what occurs, you relax and see what the day brings. “Oh yes,” I said. This is what I love so much about it. But my thoughts marched on. So when we swerved off the road and screeched to a halt I had no idea why. “What’s going on?”

“There are sea turtles over the road.” He shouted, clearly upset. And with that questioning tone – ‘you blind or what?!’

Well, yes. I was. I had completely missed a troupe of baby sea turtles crawling over the road, as had the cars before us. Ten or so babies had already been squashed into the tarmac.

When Sea Turtles hatch at night they move towards the brightest light. In wild nature this is the beautiful shimmer of light on the Ocean. Now streetlights lining roads are the brightest light so many head towards these instead, and to their death.

My friend found one alive in the middle of the road, picked it up and took him to the sea. I called him Miracle. On the way back to the car he found another in the grasses that had not yet reached the road and we took him to the sea too. I called him Lucky. “Have a good life little fella,” he said and launched him into the turquoise glassy sea. Off he went his head bopping up and down.

There I was so busy with thoughts running around my head about making the most of the day that I was oblivious to the day right in front of me.  I know I’m not alone in this. How often do you completely miss the day, the magic and opportunities right under your nose because you are busy planning in your head, worrying, working it out? And worse, how often do we cause harm?

So with the sea turtles came the reminder (again).

Drop the thoughts.

Be present.

Be free.

That we need more women as brilliant radiant role models, leading with love, sharing powerful, positive messages of compassion and possibility is not in question.  And the great thing is that more and more women are being called to step up and share their wisdom and intuition.  And they are.  Just that it is happening in the fringes, not the mainstream.  Yet.

Fears include being publicly shamed and humiliated (my own personal favourite), that no one will be interested, no one will listen, a fear of being killed, of being shot, of being dismissed, of failing, of losing the most important people you hold dear, and of just not knowing how to be visible in the world. And when we listen to and believe these fears they are strong motivation to return into hiding, remain on the fringes, keep quiet and tell yourself it’s not quite the time, when I’ve got a bit more money, when I….

We are waking up to the cost of hiding.  The individual mental, emotional, spiritual and financial cost of not showing up for the life you know it is true in your heart for you to live.  Then comes the cost to society with our systems absent of heart, values, emotional intelligence they have given way to corruption, rising greed and self-interest across the board – in politics, media, business, banking, sport, the list it goes on. Personally, I love the theory that if more women had been present in the banking sector there would not have been such a testosterone imbalance and limits would not have been pushed so extremely, the economic crisis would not of happened.

One explanation given for the absence of women and heart-centred leaders in the mainstream and the terror faced by women who want to step up is the five generations of witch-hunts – women burnt, drowned, tortured and killed for expressing their wisdom, heart and natural abilities to heal.  For five generations mothers told daughters to hide their true nature to stay safe, to stay alive.  Eventually, no one is left alive to remember a time when women were visible and powerful leading with love.

Flip this around as a solution and we simply need to create five generations of brave, courageous, big-hearted women leading with love, visible, powerful, sharing their wisdom and compassion and greatness. Women are ready, the world is ready, it’s crying out!  Step-by-step it can and will be done.

After a five year contribution to Urlings Cricket Club, where my partner Trevor Erskine was VP and Captain, I offer up a few musings on the ups and downs of a village cricket club and what’s needed for there to be a future for cricket in Antigua. 

Trev and I stepped down because the executive want funds donated for Nets and a grassroots program for children to be misused for the Club House build. We can’t support that. Raise more funds to continue the club house build. Don’t abuse the generosity of donors and steal the opportunity to play cricket from children.

We leave Urlings CC with $EC44,000 for Nets and a grassroots program that can run for a couple of years. A deal with Neil Radford to provide professional nets at factory cost and 5 newly trained coaches. Laid out and ready to go, anything less than a thriving grassroots programme is a failure. We watch with interest.

Incredibly more than 500 cricket lovers gave money, love and encouragement to Urlings Cricket Club to raise a total of $EC135,000 EC or £42,000. Children in UK schools sold lollipops at their sports day. Cricket clubs hosted fancy dress parties. England cricket fans bought drinks from the Urlings CC bar at the West Indies Test Match. 140 people attended a dinner with Michael Holding and Andy Roberts spending £24,000 on auction prizes generously donated.

To all of you Trev and I say THANK YOU SO MUCH. You are awesome.

Trust is important. When a person gives money for children to play cricket you use that money for children to play cricket. When you give your word Mr President, keep it. When you give your written word Mr Treasurer, keep it. Walk your Talk. This is even more important in a country with a culture and reputation of corruption.

£42,000 is a lot of money. For that we all want to see kids playing cricket.

Cricket in Antigua, how brilliant you could be. Right now it’s full of old men talking about the glory days. Glorious they were, yes. 50 years ago. Current day facilities are non-existent or derelict. Clubs can barely get a team together and youth development is minimal. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Work with the men and women passionate about cricket NOW. Those on the cricket field with the vision, rolling the pitches, showing up to coach kids in their free time. Support them. Move away the men robbing energy because they want to be the ‘Big Man’. They are destructive. If they were going to contribute anything to grassroots cricket in Antigua, they’d have done it by now. Stop the culture of undermining. Celebrate achievements and learn appreciation. You will create and build this way.

Have some women at the table. There were times at committee meetings when men and Sir’s were outraged that I spoke on behalf of myself and Trevor. ‘Trevor, you can’t be a man and talk for yourself?’ They said. Embarrassing. What century are we in people? Women on the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Board, Women on the West Indies Cricket Board, Women at the wicket smashing a six in Antigua, where are you? You are long overdue.

Teach competent organisational skills to sports clubs. It takes 18 months to set up a Friendly Society in Antigua, to open a bank account and set up an Exec Committee with a constitution. After all that effort the Treasurer doesn’t have to submit accounts, the Secretary doesn’t have to take minutes, the president can do what he wants,  the Executive Committee can dwindle to 3 people. There is no accountability.

Team with up with UK clubs and form friendships across the water, share ideas build relationships. Send players to the UK for the experience of playing on other surfaces and to broaden perspectives. Receive their players here in Antigua. Build an international community around coaching and leadership.

Work with the football community, unite instead of fight, build bridges not walls. While pitches are shared between football and cricket teams, co-ordinate so the football season finishes in time for the cricket season to begin. So that kids, youth and athletes can play both sports if they want to.

Right now, Urlings CC can just about make a team. This was beginning to change. Trevor nurturing a couple of youngsters onto the team and building the resources for a grassroots programme. Magnify this.

We leave you with few highlights of what was described by ‘The Big Men’ as the ‘Trevor and Kat Show’. Trev, I am so proud to be part of your show. A show all about the love of cricket, dedication to children and youth in Antigua playing cricket. I salute your heart, your vision, your patience and dedication. Put your sunglasses on if you can’t deal with people shining and sharing love.

Organisng the West Indies Foundation Level Coaching for 14 coaches from Urlings, Jennings, Mahico, Rising Sun. They also received their child protection and First Aid and I remembered it’s the people playing cricket who love cricket that’s where it’s at.

Writing successful grant applications for Jumby Bay Foundation and Sir Andy Roberts Foundation both providing 10,000 EC for the Club House building, a home for training and learning of youth locally.

3 days, should have been 5! at the England v West Indies Test Match running the bar, meeting all the England fans supporting Urlings CC. Their G+T’s got stronger on day 3 drowning their sorrows.

Selling 20 copies of Simon Lister’s book ‘Fire In Babylon’, signed by Sir Andy Roberts to kick off the fundraising campaign, chatting with Simon Lister five years later at the London Fundraiser.

Organising a sold out London Fundraiser with a dear friend Paul Snudden. Michael Holding and Andy Roberts shared their stories and an auction raised £24,000. Michael Holding mentioned Urlings CC on the Sky TV Ashes coverage! Michael also insisted on paying for his ticket for the dinner too. We can all learn from this gentleman’s grace.

Fundraising over EC 134,000 – 90,000 EC towards the club house and EC44,000 towards nets and grassroots kid’s program.
